Why is Chinese New Year's on a different day?
FUN
FACT #1
Here in the United States we celebrate New Year's on January 1st. This follows a solar calendar where 1 year equals the time it takes for the Earth to rotate around the Sun. Many Asian countries, like China and South Korea, also follow the lunar calendar which revolves around the phases of the moon. Because it follows the moon instead of the sun, Lunar New Year actually falls on a different day each year!
FUN
FACT #2
Lucky Number 88!
In Chinese, the number 8 "Ba" sounds very similar to their word "Fa," which means fortune. Therefore the number 8 is considered very lucky.
The number 88 also looks like the Chinese characters meaning double happiness.
